Project Just Another Zombie Story

So, for awhile now I was writing a story. It takes place during a zombie apocalypse, and it’s from the perspective of a young adult dude who you wouldn’t expect to be a hero. It’s rough, but I’ve gotta have confidence in my writing, ya know? Prologue maybe later for context if people actually like this. Critique in asks, reblogs, I don’t really care.

Chapter 1: The First Step

So I’ve had Happi for maybe 5 years and he’s changed drastically. Lovina came to be when I took a random pixel I did and someone joked that Happi should adopt her and I went along with it. Elena was just a random cyclops I drew because I didn’t have enough female characters, and every time I’ve draw her initial design, I’ve received fan doodles from folks. That’s cool, I guess.

I’ve actually expired two character I can’t see bringing back now; I have Geoffrey “Graffiti”, who was one of my old avatars who was a dog boy. He’s changed a lot, but now I have no idea how to bring him back. The other one was a slime girl I made forever ago. She was lime green, so I named her Anna Lime. Someone who does slime characters and I liked drew her, and I was psyched, so I kept her (she was drawn back before I realized I can’t do nsfw period). I than changed her from a frontal skinny character to a chubby, shy character who is basically always seen with Geoffrey. I made them back when I was just make original characters for fun. I’ve gone through many self inserts, but now I have Happi, who has changed so much but I can’t get rid of him as I’ve grown attached.

I wonder if I should bring them back, give up drawing all together (I’ve lost the will to draw), or just do sketches and expect fan art (Elena was just a massive accident twice). The biggest issue I suffer is that their immediate creation, they have no personality. It’s not until recently I started doing legit character development because I feel like it’s needed. I don’t know. I’m always surprised to find out people like them, because I legit just make characters I love, take parts of myself or my ideals, and just make them. Ironically, it’s the females who have no personality when I make them. But if people like them, tell me. I like it when people actually do.

Bored, fleshing out Elena a bit since she has next to no character. If you can’t read my handwriting:
Works in a bakery? (favorite desert: Angel-food cake with whip cream and strawberries)
Strawberry obsession (Jam, juice, popsicles, ointments, her fridge is just full of the stuff)
She enjoys spending time with Happi’s daughter, Lovina.
Single, prefers it that way.
Adding a bit not written out on the paper:
Surprisingly strong (cyclops genes)
Suffers from minor insomnia due to eating so many sweets
Friendly
Competitive when it comes to cooking
Has hips for days

This is old and dumb. I can’t remember when I lost the ability to actually sprite something, but this is the “Pre-Lovina” before she had a name and I just called her “Sweater Loli”. I still find the little pixel cute as buttons, though.

So… He how has normal arm-length arms. Old arms got busted, his replacement arts were designed to be normal length. For the first time since he was 10 he’s had short arms. Said arms also also have noticeably smaller hands. Excited can’t even describe how he felt.
Long story short, I’m keeping this design. Long arms were becoming a pain in the ass to draw. What a cop out, amirite?

Trying out something new: a more casual look for Happi and bring back an old oc. Meet Elena, a cyclops who enjoys strawberries. Her original design was a bit…heftier in the chest area. She’s now a little taller, some wider hips, and a new sunhat, along with bouncy, fluffy hair. No relation, they’re merely neighbors, she occasionally babysits Happi’s daughter.
Since Happi is roughly 8’9”, she’s kind of tall. Not as wide as he is though. This is really rough, but I enjoy it. I like having another female for my cast.

I’m not used to actually drawing backsides of characters, I decided to use it for world building. The main problem Happi faces are his hands, which are able to hold a basketball, possibly? This was a rushed sketch I did when I was tired, so it’s kind of crap. Also, attempting at a stepladder of sorts, trying to keep a consistent size for Lovina.
Since he’s clumsy, pizza is an average dinner in the Smiles household. Lovina learns how to cook thanks to her sitters, merely to help her handicapped father.

Sketch concept of Happi. Still iffy. Oh well. Concepts, hooray.

This is something I’m trying to get into the whole “character design” thing. So let’s meet my first attempt; Shovel Knight fan character Paddle Knight. Keep in mind, I’m not REALLY keeping him, but this is a good example.

The first picture is the first sketch. Here we see his main design; a knight in a boat. He was given a (poorly drawn) sun hat and his main weapon is a paddle inspired by the paddle weapon Nightmare in Soul Calibur 2 used.

The second sketch is redesigning his outfit. Instead of a generic armor, I went for a coat underneath, but he has chest protection from the first sketch. Also looking at size compared to his paddle. I sort of strayed from the concept of a pedalo…captain?

Finally, we have what I would call his final look. This would be his “intro” animation, his boat has capsized “due” to the player (Shovel Knight?). It’d be a glass cannon situation; he takes a single circle of damage from the weapon, but he’s agile. His paddle is usually resting in the boat, but he uses it near half health. His other skills would be throwing his hat for long range and merely swinging his arms up close. He’d be like Tinker Knight if I wanted him to use his paddle like I mentioned earlier.

I’m not an expert, but it’s important to keep this in mind. Don’t stick with the first design, which I’ve done in the past. Oh, also, I don’t know how to draw armor, hence why I replaced his arms, but that might have been a better idea on the design standpoint.
